If you're looking for a place to eat in Vermont, you'll have your choice of almost every kind of setting. You can get good food in as fancy a setting as you want. Or, you can find a nice roadside hamburger place to eat out on the picnic tables.

Real Vermonters know enough to never miss a gathering down at the church hall, where you'll help out a good cause and get a great meal for just a couple of dollars. For fancier outings, you can find any kind a Vermont restaurant with cuisine from Thai and Indian to Italian or just good traditional Vermont fare.

Vermont's restaurants know you can't beat fresh food grown locally. Many of them are in what they call the Vermont Fresh Network. This network encourages farmers, producers and chefs to work with each other to rush food from field to table as quickly as possible. And, it builds stronger local communities when everyone pulls together. In Middlebury, the Waybury Inn serves up a very tasty meal. Try their Kentucky Bourbon Steak or Salmon Mimosa. Over in Essex, Butler’s Restaurant at the Inn at Essex offers what they call gourmet American cuisine. They've brought in chefs from the New England Culinary Institute who can cook almost like a church lady. If you're looking for something spicy, the Five Spice Café in Burlington has dishes you can't pronounce from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Burma, and China.

Ye Olde England Inne in Stowe make great food with authentic British hospitality. They've got four dining rooms, each set up with different British theme to fit your mood. For an adventure, choose Mr. Pickwick's Pub. You’ll find venison, wild boar and partridge on the menu. And, Mr. Pickwick offers over 150 ales.

The Trapp Family Lodge, owned by the Von Trapps of "The Sound of Music" fame, has 93 rooms and great atmosphere.

In East Burke, in the Northeast Kingdom, The Inn At Mountain View Farm lays out all natural meats, grown without any hormones. Their menu changes with the seasons to highlight locally grown produce and they use organically raised herbs and vegetables.

Skiers and leaf peepers know all about the traditional Irish Pub in Killington. They serve a daily pub menu, bring in live Irish music on the weekend. And, of course they'll draw you a pint of Guinness. Just down the road is Hemingway's Restaurant, they've earned quite a name for themselves; Food & Wine Magazine rated them one of the top 25 restaurants in America.

But, don't overlook all of the local gems. Seasoned travelers look to see where the trucks are parked to spot a good meal when they're in new country. If you're in Vermont, those trucks are likely to be out behind the P&H Truck Stop in Wells River. This is a unique truck stop, their kitchen has been praised by Gourmet Magazine.

Just down the road in Bradford, the United Church of Christ is known far & wide for their Annual Wild Game Supper. They serve up local game, cooked in as many ways as you can imagine. You'll find pheasant, venison, wild boar, rabbit, beaver, moose and even bear on the menu. Alongside the game, you'll find huge servings of local produce.
